Trumpeter Swan vs. Mute Swan

We have a small lake in our backyard and I love how spring brings new ducks to visit. We always have a pair of mute swans that come each year and they usually have a batch of babies too. This year, we have the same pair of mute swans, but a rare trumpeter swan has decided he wants to live here too. He’s been here two weeks, all alone, but the mute swans keep chasing him!

After seeing it, I had to get up to speed on my swan identification. This was helpful:

In our area, the DNR is killing off the aggressive mute swans so that the native trumpeter species can thrive. It’s created quite a bit of controversy.

If only they could all get along!
